KARACHIStudents from the Department of Media and Communication Studies at Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) paid an enriching visit to the historic Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Wednesday. The visit, led by Chairperson Dr. Ambreen Fazal and Dr. Nosheen Hussain, provided students a rare glimpse into the legacy, role, and functioning of Pakistan’s oldest and most respected media hub.

Arriving at around 11:30 AM, the delegation was warmly received by KPC Joint Secretary Muhammad Munsif, KPC Health Committee Secretary Hamid ur Rehman, and Skill Development Committee Member Rehan Hyder — a prominent media trainer and digital journalist.

The session began with an engaging orientation where students were briefed about the historic roots of journalism in Pakistan, the vital role KPC played in upholding democracy, and the evolution of the Pakistani media industry over the years. Students were also introduced to the practical challenges faced by journalists today and the urgent need to adapt to digital transformation in media.

Industry Experts Encourage Ethical, Skilled Journalism

Rehan Hyder, known for his contributions to digital journalism and media training, emphasized the importance of journalistic ethics, integrity, and values. “Aspiring journalists must not only master storytelling but also understand the power of responsible journalism in shaping society,” he noted. He also highlighted the significance of such visits in building strong industry-academia linkages, helping students form real-world networks beyond the classroom.

Muhammad Munsif advised students to stay up-to-date with modern tools and media technologies. “Today’s journalists must be tech-savvy and data-informed. Equip yourself with digital skills, multimedia tools, and critical thinking to enter the media landscape with confidence and credibility,” he stressed.

Hamid ur Rehman interacted with students in a candid Q&A session, addressing their queries about professional journalism practices, media ethics, and career prospects in Pakistan’s rapidly evolving media sector.

Adding further inspiration, KPC Governing Body Member Mona Siddiqui joined the session and specifically encouraged female students to break barriers in the media industry. She emphasized resilience, knowledge, and self-belief as keys to success in journalism and media leadership.

Exploring the Heart of Pakistani Journalism

The students were then taken on a guided tour of the Karachi Press Club’s iconic premises. From the digital studio, conference room, and gym to the computer lab, library, canteen, terrace, and committee room, the students explored every corner of the KPC with excitement and curiosity.

To conclude the visit, a Hi-Tea reception was arranged for the delegation, where faculty and students mingled with senior journalists and KPC members, creating lasting impressions and connections.

Strengthening Future Media Leaders

Dr. Ambreen Fazal and Dr. Nosheen Hussain thanked the Karachi Press Club for hosting the students and expressed their hope for more such collaborative learning experiences in the future. “This visit was not only educational but deeply inspiring. It’s vital for our students to engage directly with media professionals and institutions,” said Dr. Fazal.

Rehan Hyder further commented, “Bridging the gap between academia and the media industry is crucial. Such initiatives help future journalists build networks, gain insights, and align their academic learning with real-world media challenges.”
