- New initiative aims to provide affordable treatment, expert clinics, and medical training for health reporters
KARACHI – In a vital step towards ensuring the health and welfare of journalists, the Karachi Press Club (KPC) and Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) have agreed to cooperate in providing affordable healthcare services, organizing medical camps, and launching training programs for health reporters. This collaboration is expected to significantly enhance medical access for journalists and their families in Karachi.
The agreement was discussed during a visit by Dr. Salman Faridi, Medical Director of Liaquat National Hospital, to the Karachi Press Club.
The visit was arranged by the Health Committee of KPC and attended by KPC President Fazil Jamili, Secretary Sohail Afzal Khan, Joint Secretary Khawaja Muhammad Munsif, Secretary Health Committee Hamidur Rehman, senior journalist Tufail, Professor Saleha Shahzad, and LNH’s Head of Press and Media Amjad Rizvi.
Health Facilities for Journalists: A Joint Commitment
During the visit, Dr. Salman Faridi emphasized the importance of supporting the journalist community by offering concessions on treatment and lab tests at Liaquat National Hospital. He also proposed setting up quarterly or semi-annual medical camps and consultancy clinics at the Press Club for the benefit of its members.
He termed the Karachi Press Club a “champion of press freedom and democracy,” and stressed the importance of media in today’s age of misinformation. “We hope to work closely with the press club to run public health awareness campaigns, provide specialist consultations, and offer medical training for health journalists,” said Dr. Faridi.
KPC Focused on Journalists’ Health
KPC President Fazil Jamili welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the club’s commitment to journalist welfare, saying: “The Press Club is not just a voice for democracy and freedom of expression, but also deeply cares about the healthcare needs of its members.”
KPC Secretary Sohail Afzal Khan pointed out that journalists often face financial difficulties due to delayed salaries from media houses. “In such a situation, the Press Club is stepping in to ensure our members have access to affordable and quality healthcare,” he said.
Health Committee Advocating for More Support
Speaking on the occasion, Hamidur Rehman, Secretary of the Health Committee of KPC, emphasized that health is a top priority for the club. “We are already collaborating with Kutiyana Memon Hospital, Memon Hospital, and Modern Hospital, who offer healthcare concessions to our members,” he said.
“We want to formalize a partnership with Liaquat National Hospital as well, where our members can benefit from discounted treatment and lab services. Additionally, we hope LNH experts will conduct free consultancy clinics and medical camps at KPC on a quarterly or semi-annual basis,” he added.
This partnership between Karachi Press Club and Liaquat National Hospital is being seen as a major breakthrough for journalist welfare in Pakistan, setting a precedent for healthcare access, professional training, and long-term institutional collaboration.
