KARACHI: The Department of Media and Communication Studies at Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) hosted a powerful and eye-opening guest lecture on “The Entrepreneurial Edge in Digital Media” by Rehan Hyder — a well-known journalist, media trainer, life coach, and consultant.
Addressing a packed room of eager media students, Rehan Hyder encouraged them to shift their focus from traditional journalism jobs to creating their own digital media startups. He emphasized that today’s tools like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, podcasting, and SEO provide endless opportunities to build content-based businesses while still studying.
“You don’t need a channel — you are the channel now,” Rehan said while guiding students on how to convert ideas into real, revenue-generating ventures.

During the interactive session, Rehan proposed a 7–8 week long hands-on program designed specifically to help students build, launch, and grow their own startups during their academic journey. The program would take them through idea generation, pitching, business planning, content creation, digital marketing, and monetization strategies — setting them up for real-world success.
Rehan also spoke about the future of content and how technology is rapidly transforming the way people consume news and entertainment. “In the next five years, the world will move towards immersive experiences — the Metaverse, VR, and AR. Those who start learning and experimenting with these technologies today will be the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
He introduced NIC Karachi (National Incubation Center) as a valuable platform where students can pitch their ideas, get mentorship, and begin their entrepreneurial journey in media and communication.
Students responded enthusiastically, asking insightful questions about startup models, earning online, and building audiences. Some even shared their own early-stage content projects and received real-time feedback from the guest speaker.
The session ended with a warm gesture as Dr. Ambreen Fazal, Chairperson of the Department of Media and Communication Studies, presented an Honorary Shield of SMIU to Rehan Hyder in recognition of his efforts and inspiration.
Rehan also thanked Dr. Nosheen Hussain for the invitation and appreciated the students’ passion and energy. “It was truly a joy to interact with such vibrant and forward-thinking students,” he said.

This session served as a much-needed push for young journalists to embrace the freedom, innovation, and impact of digital entrepreneurship, and to start building for a tech-driven media future — right from the classroom.
