“If pending salaries are not cleared, KUJ (Dastoor) will be forced to launch a nationwide protest,” — Meeting Resolution

The Karachi Union of Journalists (Dastoor) has raised alarm over unpaid salaries of journalists and media workers, warning of a nationwide protest if pending dues are not cleared.

Concern Over Non-Payment of Media Workers’ Salaries, Warning of Nationwide Protest

Karachi: The Karachi Union of Journalists (Dastoor) held an emergency meeting under the chairmanship of President Nasrullah Khan. The meeting was attended by Secretary Rehan Khan Chishti, other office bearers along with members of the governing body.

The agenda focused primarily on the non-payment of salaries to journalists and media workers. Unit chiefs from various media houses were contacted to gather updates on the situation. The union expressed serious concern and demanded that both private and state-owned media organizations release all pending salaries immediately. It warned that failure to do so would compel KUJ (Dastoor) to launch a nationwide protest and file complaints against the defaulting organizations.

A representative of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Dastoor), Shams Keerio also attended the meeting on behalf of PFUJ general secretary A.H. Khanzada and extended full support to KUJ. Shams Keerio stressed that all private and government organizations must first be warned to clear dues at the earliest; otherwise, journalists reserve the right to launch protests across the country.

Secretary Rehan Khan Chishti also sought updates from the scrutiny committee and directed that a complete report be submitted by the end of September so that final member lists can be issued. Subsequent appeals will then be reviewed and decided upon.

The meeting also approved the organization of a Seerat-un-Nabi (PBUH) Conference and reviewed plans to ensure its successful execution. A separate meeting for female members was also scheduled to address their concerns, with governing body member Kateeja Rathore and Anum Razzak assigned responsibility for its arrangements.

The union further announced plans to hold workshops and seminars, committing to organize at least two by the end of September. These workshops will not only focus on professional skill development but also prepare journalists and media workers to apply for national and international fellowships, grants, and reporting funds. Participants will be guided on application processes, proposal writing, and strategies to position themselves competitively for such opportunities.
